We're having some really cool harmony discussions on this forum, really enjoying them and learning with knowledgeable cats.

How about we pick a tune and we all start throwing ideas on how to arrange it, Ted style ? I thought it would be a great learning process for everybody. I don't know about you fellows but ultimately this is what I'd like to achieve by studying Ted's breathtaking work. I mean the ability to improvise a chord melody on the fly (or almost).

We could start with a simple melody, write down the chords and build a simple arrangement from there, eventually adding more spice as we go.

Any thoughts ?

I've been thinking the same thing!
Any ideas on a tune?

Pick one for which we DON'T have a Ted arrangement...otherwise we'll be comparing the joint-arrangement to the master's.

Or maybe pick one the we DO have a Ted arrangement for and reveal it later after we try our hand at it ourselves.

Excellent choice.  Let's do "The Way You Look Tonight" since Ted did not do that piece.

So to get the ball rolling I've attached the lead sheet...

...and my two suggestion for the first two measures.  Feel free to post other variations on measures 1 and 2....or improve my chords.  I kept it simple for the beginning of the tune...no moving lines (although there's a lot of open land in those two measures).

Here's another lead sheet in the key of  F that shows that little 4 measure instrumental intro. which also happens just prior to the 1st and 2nd endings.
The other lead sheet wasn't as clear about that line.

Nice changes Paul.
I especially like the 1st Dm9 voicing.
This is fun.

Maybe we could back up a little and start off with a very simple bare bones aproach, then spice it up a bit one applied concept at a time.

I have heard the intro done a bunch of different ways.
This is in the spirit of the Frank Sinatra recording.
Ok I'll stop now.

We could lay down the simple melody on a tab and start from there (voicings, subs, etc).

Somehow I didn't see this thread. Here's a little intro idea with the first part of the theme.

edit: i forgot the fret marker for the last two chords in line 2. If anybody was wondering, there should be a 8 above the bass note in both chords.
