Hi folks,

I have been browsing this web page for a few months now, and I have downloaded all kinds of really cool stuff from other students and friends of Ted Greene. I studied with Ted for two years between 1987 and 1989. Wow, what a guitarist, instructor, and to me was the ultimate "Sifu Grandmaster Guitar Guru"... (we used to joke about the comparison of the dedication it took to excel in martial arts to the dedication it took to excel on guitar...) Studying with Ted meant a lot to me, and I was touched in a special way by this remarkable man. I'm sure others feel this same way whether you were students, friends, readers of his books, or maybe are just now discovering this guitar virtuoso.

Just today, I have sent several folks from the forum e-mails just to say "hi." While I was doing that, I had the thought that it would be really cool to have a get-together somehow, someway, someday where Ted's students, his friends, and just generally folks who love him could meet in person and share our experiences, or maybe some fun stories about our lessons, heck... maybe even have a massive guitar jam session... who knows... (?)

I would be into it...

I'm in Michigan, so... since I'm bringing up the idea, I'd also like to first say that I am willing to travel to where ever it would be determined we could meet to fellowship with other Ted Greene admirers, enthusiasts, students, friends of, etc... I could picture that if I had a few days off, that it would be pretty cool to fly to some pre-determined location on Earth, and meet with other folks from the forum, from his life in general, and basically, just have a really good time.

.I thought it might also be a really cool way to share material, favorite CDs, talk about artists who we've encountered along life's path, and all-in-all it would be a very positive thing. Sort of a live extension of the forum itself. At the same time, a celebration of sorts to just life... past, present, and future.

I think it is a very good idea, but it needs input from other sources... so... let the idea cook for a while on the back burner, and post your ideas about it here.

Personally, I'd love to meet some of you other folks who knew or appreciate Ted. I think we would all carry from the meeting a very positive, up-lifting and memorable experience.

Those are a few short English words thrown together to support a few of my random thoughts about it... Let me know what you folks think...

I really appreciate this special forum, and the folks here are like gel... thanks for maintaining this site... if you ever need any help keeping it going, please do not hesitate to ask. I have a degree in computer networking, and I also have some connections with the local college and an instructor there who often times gives me (literally) truck loads of computer parts. So, if you eve need anything for the server, or this page, please let me know. I will make an attempt to find whatever it is you need, and send it to you free of charge and free of shipping. That's the least I could do for my friends who maintain such a cool page...

:-)

Jim

ps. You are welcome to e-mail me, too if you'd like to correspond back and forth. I think it would be fun. My e-mail address is: gear.geek01@gmail.com

Seems like a lot of fun. I'm not sure how to organize it. Since you would be coming from far away, why don't you list some dates that might work for you and we can all respond to that?

I'm that kid with his face pressed against the glass who never got to enter the candy store '8( That said, you have made it possible for me to get to know at least part of the man, mentor and teacher that was Ted Greene. I can understand why you would wish to get together and share how this gentle, nurturing person shaped who you've come to be. I'd like to tell you that at this late date, and with the aid of this website, he is still shaping musical futures. After hearing Phil Keaggy say that he had a fervent desire to improve every day, I realized how lazy I'd become. I was gifted with a love for music from the time I can remember, and I was wasting it! I've played for so many years, and because I could easily play things that entertained, I thought that must be enough. Until that plateau began to bore me. I had always loved music, and it tortured me to be bored by it! I began to cast about to find some way of challenging my playing and my practice (I have been totally self taught, no older brother, no band mates, nothing). Mind you, I don't say that with pride, just pointing out that I didn't know where to look or what I needed! With the sheets that have been shared here and Mark and Dan's lesson tapes that were shared, I have been aided tremendously! I've kicked it into high gear independently, and I have begun to study jazz with Jay Roberts (Howard Roberts' son), and it has been wonderful. My point in all this, is that the numbered alumni who have been influenced and improved by Ted Greene is going to be gargantuan one day, because of the efforts of people like you. Imagine the way he would smile, knowing that all of you are sharing what he shared with you, and you're not looking to gain anything for it! I cannot presume to put words in his mouth, but I have to believe he'd say to himself, "They really DID get what it was I was trying to teach them - that music isn't only the notes, it is the heart and the love between and behind the notes." Hey, call it warm and fuzzy if you want, but he cared so much, it couldn't have only been, "Well, I give it an 84 because it had a good beat and I could dance to it." I'll close for now, I know that I am not technically one of the alumni, but thanks to you all I'm working on it. I hope your get-together gets gotten together '8)

Thank you,

Mark

Hey Mark. I don't think it would matter if you were one of the alumni. In fact, we could say the get-together was for anyone who was interested in Ted, learning, sharing and having fun.

Hi to All,
We've (Dan S. & I) have been pondering this idea for quite some time. We were thinking of renting the same room where Ted's memorial celebration was, very large, beautiful & lots of electrical outlets. However, we would need to know how many people are interested in attending, and of course, when a good time for this would be. Probably summer.

For now, we can probably get a general idea from the response to Jim's initial post. (I think)? We'll see.

Barbara

Dear Chemical,

I think the gathering of the tribe is a fabulous idea...

My "yikes" at the thought of transitioning from virtual to actual referred to personal challenges I have with going anyplace where there will be more than a few people... that being said, I wouldn't miss it for the world.

See you there!

When i heard the word picnic, i just naturally imagined an outdoor park with lots of grass and trees- tables with hot dogs and potato chips. That sort of thing would still be my preference, but Barbie brings up a good point about electrical outlets, since we would certainly want to play music.

Ideas?

Hi Dan,
Where is there a park like that around here? ....if there is such a place it sounds great & we could always bring extra, extra long extension chords?

Where in the L.A. area do you live? Is there possibly a way to look something up on the internet to see if there is a place you can rent for a day? Id be willing to pay a fairshare. I always have this vision of this wide open room in the middle of a park, Like somewhere where you would hold a wedding and hold it there.
