In my opinion, Oz Noy is the man with this technique.  If I am not mistaken, Pat Martino started decades ago.  For some reason, the disc 'Bar Wars' comes to mind...don't quote me on that. 

Anyway, here is a lesson Oz did on the subject.  I took a lesson w/ him a few years ago and he went through much the same thing.  Pretty much applies the same general formula to any scale.
